The Tennessee Vols made a nice addition this past week by landing a commitment from 2027 four-star offensive tackle Q’Mari Hudson.

Hudson, 6-foot-5/330 pounds from Chesapeake, VA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 40 offensive tackle in the nation and the No. 9 player in the state of Virginia.

Virginia Tech was the team to beat for Hudson at one point, but the Vols were able to close the deal in part because of Tennessee offensive line coach Glen Elarbee.

But Elarbee wasn’t the only reason the Vols won this recruiting battle — Hudson’s mom also played a key role.

Vols insider says Q’Mari Hudson’s mom played a “pivotal” role in the four-star recruit picking Tennessee over Virginia Tech

VolQuest’s Austin Price joined 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will earlier this week and pointed out that Hudson’s mom was key in Tennessee beating out Virginia Tech for the four-star offensive lineman.

“I think there were some options there for Q’Mari Hudson,” said Price. “And to get him and beat out the in-state Virginia Tech Hokies was a big deal. At one point, a week ago, I think the kid was going to Virginia Tech, and his mom played a pivotal role in him picking Tennessee. She just had such a trust and belief in the staff here, and I think that’s one of the big reasons that Tennessee won out.”

Every recruitment is different, and players make decisions for different reasons. Family, though, almost always plays a key role in decisions. The outcome of this recruiting battle is another example of how Josh Heupel’s staff is elite at building relationships not just with recruits, but also with recruits’ families.
