It's been a wild month for college football, thanks mostly to the Nick Saban's surprise retirement from Alabama, and it looks like it's about to get even wilder.
On Wednesday evening, news broke that Jim Harbaugh is leaving Michigan to replace Brandon Staley as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.
With Harbaugh off to the NFL, it means that Michigan players will have 30 days to enter the transfer portal.
It also means that Michigan is in the market for a new head coach.
Promoting offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore is one option for Michigan. But would a program that gave Harbaugh an offer that would've made him the highest paid coach in college football really settle for a coach with no previous head coaching experience?
It's possible that Michigan promotes Moore, but it's also possible that they look for a more proven head coach. LSU's Brian Kelly would certainly make a lot of sense for Michigan.
Kelly has spent time as the head coach at Grand Valley State, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame. Geographically and culturally, Kelly is a better fit at Michigan than he is at LSU. And he's one of the few coaches in college football that's reached the College Football Playoff. Kelly would clearly be a better option than Moore (if Kelly is willing to leave Baton Rouge).
And if Kelly does end up in Ann Arbor, it would then open up LSU's roster to the transfer portal (and the Tigers would also be in the market for a new head coach).
Buckle up, the last week of January could get crazy in college football.
