‘Tennessee didn’t go anywhere much after that’ – Steve Spurrier reacts to Florida’s loss to the Vols in the Swamp
The Tennessee Vols ended a 22 year losing streak in Gainesville with their win over the Florida Gators this past weekend.
Steve Spurrier was in the house on Saturday night to see his beloved Florida Gators lose to the Tennessee Vols.
Tennessee’s 31-11 win over Florida was the Vols’ first road win against the Gators since 2003.
The former Florida head coach only lost to Tennessee once in Gainesville (in 2001, which was Spurrier’s last game as the Gators’ head coach in the Swamp). And he was busy coaching in the NFL when the Vols beat Florida in 2003. So it had to be an unusual feeling for Spurrier to see the Gators get blown out by Tennessee on the field that bears his name.

Spurrier joined Another Dooley Noted Podcast on Monday for his weekly appearance and he shared some thoughts on Florida’s loss to Tennessee.
“I can never remember a game where the start was like it was,” said Spurrier. “I think I read where Tennessee had 28 points before [Florida] made a first down. We went three-and-out on the first three possessions. They had the opening kickoff and they scored every time — at least they quit scoring on us. 31 to 11 doesn’t look so bad.
“But it was a lackluster night, and nothing went right until we had the touchdown drive and (DJ) Lagway made a beautiful pass to (Jadan) Baugh. He took his steps and threw the ball and hit him on a dead line, and that was the offensive play of the game for the Gators. We had one.”
In true Spurrier fashion, the Head Ball Coach had to take one small swipe at the Vols by pointing out that Tennessee didn’t score in the second half.
“And then, for some reason, Tennessee didn’t go anywhere much after that,” said Spurrier. “They didn’t try a lot.”
Spurrier, though, did point out that the Vols looked like they knew what they were doing on offense, unlike the Gators.
“They spread out and they knew what they were doing,” said Spurrier. “I’m watching them play and I’m watching us play. I said, ‘Tennessee, they know what they’re doing. We’re scrambling around here, scrambling around there.’ So I don’t know how we exactly tell the quarterback what to do, but there’s too many scramble plays.”
That’s a win that Tennessee fans will remember for years to come. And it’s a Florida loss that Spurrier will likely try hard to forget.
