Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton had an up-and-down game in the Dallas Cowboys’ 31-13 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday evening.
Milton, who is battling Will Grier for the backup quarterback job in Dallas, completed nine-of-18 passes for 122 yards and an interception against the Ravens.
The former Vol completed an impressive deep ball to wide receiver Jonathan Mingo, but also threw an interception on an overthrow and took a sack in the end zone on a play that Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said was on Milton.
“I wouldn’t say I’m concerned,” said Schottenheimer. “We didn’t get into rhythm offensively. What we did in the first half against the Rams, I think we came out a little bit of a different mindset in terms of trying to run the ball. They got him. They fooled him a little bit on the safety on the third down there. We were trying to get the ball out of his hand fast. They showed down one side and brought the blitz from the other side, and it just spooked him. He’s got to try to throw that ball away, and his feet were kind of talking to him.
“We were backed up. We had the negative play, so we called a quick answer,” added Schottenheimer when asked about Milton taking the safety. “They showed down, and his feet were kind of — he was holding on the slant. We tried to throw a little flat slant combination, and they had two free runners, so that was on him. He should have thrown it away.”
Schottenheimer, despite the bad play on the safety, said he’s not panicked about Milton’s performance.
“It wasn’t just Joe. We have to be able to run the ball better. . .Joe Milton is in year two. I’m not panicked.”
Milton, who gave himself a “D” for his effort against the Ravens, will get his next (and final) chance to make a good preseason impression on Aug. 22 when the Cowboys take on the Atlanta Falcons.
