‘I think he’ll probably be available, but it would be in a limited role’ – Vols insider gives the latest on injured playmaker
The Tennessee Vols, like most teams, are dealing with some tough injuries as the regular season winds down.
The Tennessee Vols, like most teams in college football, are dealing with some injuries as the season winds down.
We already know that a few Tennessee players will be out this weekend against the Florida Gators. Tight end Miles Kitselman, wide receiver Joakim Dodson, cornerback Rickey Gibson, cornerback Jermod McCoy, and safety Sydney Walton have already been ruled out on the SEC injury report.
Running back Peyton Lewis and offensive guard Wendell Moe are listed as questionable for the matchup against the Gators.
Vols insider gives the latest on Peyton Lewis and Wendell Moe
VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs joined 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will on Friday for his weekly appearance, and he discussed the statuses of Lewis and Moe for the Florida game.
Hubbs believes Lewis could be available for the Vols on Saturday night, but likely only in a limited role.
“My guess is Peyton Lewis is probably going to be more of an emergency deal only,” said Hubbs. “He’s practiced very little this week. I think he’ll travel. I think he’ll still be questionable, but I think he’ll probably be available. But it would be in a limited role.
“So, I think the rotation shrinks so [that] it’s just DeSean Bishop and Star Thomas. You’ll see a rotation in the first half, but I think they will get to the ‘hot guy’ faster than they have in most games this year, where they’ve been trying to rotate three guys, I guess, for the purpose of keeping everybody involved and happy — whatever the case may be. I still feel like DeSean Bishop is better on carries 15 through 25 then he will be [on carries] 1 through 15. I just think that’s his running style.”
Lewis is third on the team in rushing yards (290) and second on the team in rushing touchdowns (7).
Update: Lewis was ruled out for the Florida game on the SEC injury report that was released on Friday evening.
As for Moe, Hubbs suggested that he’ll be a true game-time decision on Saturday. If Moe can’t play, it’ll mean that Jesse Perry will have to play the whole game at guard, and redshirt freshman Bennett Warren could be the next man up at tackle if left tackle Lance Heard or right tackle David Sanders is forced to exit the game.
Update: Moe was removed from the injury report on Friday evening.
Tennessee and Florida kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night in Gainesville.
