Tony Vitello reveals he was working on something pretty cool for Tennessee baseball before he left that Vols fans would’ve loved

Former Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello was back in the south this week for the San Francisco Giants’ three-game series against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Stadium.

The Braves are perhaps the only thing on the planet that unites Tennessee and Georgia fans. Atlanta obviously plays in the state of Georgia, so the majority of their fan base is made up of Bulldogs fans. But the Braves are the closest MLB franchise to Knoxville, so many Vols fans root for Atlanta.

“There’s plenty of Georgia fans around here,” said Vitello earlier this week. “But there’s also just so many Tennessee alum and people that have a background related to Tennessee and cheer (for the Braves).”

Vitello revealed during his media session with reporters before the start of the series against the Braves that he was working on Tennessee playing a game in Atlanta before he left Knoxville to take over as the manager of the Giants.

“I always wanted our team to play here and worked hard to do it,” said Vitello. “And we were on the brink of doing so.”

Maybe new Vols head coach Josh Elander can still find a way to make a game in Atlanta happen for Tennessee baseball. There’s absolutely no doubt that Vols fans would fill Truist Stadium and replace the familiar red and black with a blanket of orange.
