A coveted transfer forward that Rick Barnes and the Tennessee Vols had recently shown interest in committed to another program on Monday without visiting Rocky Top.

According to On3’s Joe Tipton, Tennessee expressed “some interest” in Syracuse transfer forward Donnie Freeman.

Freeman, 6-foot-9/205 pounds from Washington D.C., averaged 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds while playing 31.3 minutes per game at Syracuse this past season. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

On Monday, Freeman committed to St John’s without visiting Tennessee.

Kentucky, Alabama, and UConn were also in the mix for the transfer forward.

Kentucky spent significant time recruiting Freeman, so this news hits the Vols’ border rival a bit harder.

The Vols, meanwhile, are still looking to fill some needs in the transfer portal. Tennessee is in hot pursuit of Wake Forest transfer guard Juke Harris. It’s also believed that Tennessee wants to add another big man or two.

The NCAA transfer portal closes this week. Players that are in the portal, however, can transfer to a new school at any time, it doesn’t have to be this week.

Tennessee has landed five transfer additions so far this offseason.
