The state of Tennessee won a preliminary injunction in its lawsuit against the NCAA last week, which means recruits can negotiate with NIL collectives.
While the Tennessee Vols aren't connected to the lawsuit, the ruling should mean that good news is on the way for UT athletics when it comes to the NCAA's inquiry into the program's NIL dealings.
VolQuest's Austin Price joined 104.5 The Zone's Ramon, Kayla, and Will on Tuesday and he shared some thoughts on whether or not Tennessee could still get hit with a notice of allegations from the NCAA.
"Normally it (notice of allegations) comes really quick after they have their summary meeting to kind of go over everything and it never came," said Price. "Because, obviously, the state of Tennessee sued the NCAA and I think that kind of threw them into a little tailspin."
"I'm not sure we ever see the notice of allegations," continued Price. "Is it possible? Sure. They could still send it. But so much of the stuff they're trying to retroactively punish Tennessee for wasn't even a guidance, much less a rule when any of the stuff happened. All that is thrown out now with the ruling by Judge (Clifton) Corker. So I'm not sure we see them throw what they tried to present to Tennessee at Tennessee."
The NCAA's inquiry that proceeded the lawsuit revolved around Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava and the NIL deal he received as a recruit. Iamaleava's deal was made with an NIL collective independent of Tennessee athletics. But the NCAA retroactively deemed NIL collectives as boosters. They were essentially trying to punish the Vols for something that wasn't against the rules at the time.
Fortunately for Tennessee, it sounds like the notice of allegations that seemed certain to come before the lawsuit will never make its way to Knoxville.
