The Tennessee Vols are hoping to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff in 2024.
Tennessee is one of several programs across the nation, including SEC rivals like Ole Miss and Missouri, that's hoping to reach the playoff, which expands to 12 teams this upcoming season. It will be "easier" to make the playoff thanks to expansion, but there will still be plenty of competition for those 12 spots (six automatic bids for conference champions and then the six next highest ranked teams).
247Sports recently detailed the "make or break factor" for each top 25 team ahead of the 2024 season and they think the outcome of Tennessee's season will depend on quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who will be the Vols' starter this fall.
From 247Sports: One year after leading the nation in scoring, Tennessee slid all the way to 40th last season with a new quarterback in Joe Milton III. The Volunteers are poised for another signal-caller shift and could return to offensive prominence with a former five-star recruit in Iamaleava under center, but he is young and almost entirely unproven at the college level.
That feels like an obvious choice for the Vols. If Tennessee is going to make some noise and truly compete for a championship, they'll certainly need elite quarterback play — something they were lacking in 2023 with Joe Milton under center.
Iamaleava has an incredibly high ceiling. If he reaches that ceiling, the sky is the limit for the Vols in 2024.
