Former Tennessee Vols outfielder Drew Gilbert had one of the most memorable moments in college baseball history in 2021 when he hit a walk-off home run against Wright State in the Knoxville Regional.

Gilbert’s home run has been replayed thousands of times in the last five years. It was an iconic moment that put Tony Vitello’s Vols on the national map.

The home run was a no doubter — not something you typically expect from a 5-foot-9 outfielder.

Gilbert, in fact, thinks it was the longest home run of his baseball career.

But he has no idea how far it actually went because Tennessee wasn’t allowed to use its Trackman technology in postseason play.

“I think the furthest homer I ever hit was hit a walk-off homer against Wright State in the regionals in 2021,” said Gilbert in a recent interview with Batboys Baeball. “And at that time you weren’t allowed to use your Trackman system — you had to cover it up for postseason play. So I have no idea how far [it went]. But that was by far the farthest ball I’ve ever hit. Obviously, it was a metal bat, so I don’t know how much that counts.”

It’s unfortunate that we don’t know how far the ball traveled off Gilbert’s bat, but it doesn’t change that it was one of the best moments we’ve ever seen in college baseball.
