Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel and secondary coach Willie Martinez shared a special moment on Saturday night as UT knocked off No. 18 Kentucky.

As the clock hit zero, Heupel left the sideline to shake hands after the Vols’ 45-42 win.

But before he could get too far away, Martinez grabbed Heupel by the shoulder and the two shared an embrace.

Martinez and Heupel have known each other for a long time. They were on staff together at Oklahoma in 2010 and 2011 (Martinez was the secondary coach during those two years while Heupel was the Sooners’ quarterbacks coach/offensive coordinator).

When Heupel needed a secondary coach at UCF in 2018, he gave Martinez a call.

Martinez, who coached at Tennessee from 2013-2016, was on Heupel’s staff at UCF from 2018-2020.

This moment after the game shows that Tennessee’s coaching staff is extremely close. Martinez was genuinely happy for Heupel after the big road win against the Wildcats.

This is a stark contrast to the previous staff at Tennessee, which often seemed at odds with each other.

There’s no doubt the vibe has changed immensely at UT over the last nine months.
