Yahoo Sports hit the Tennessee Vols with some serious disrespect this week.

The national publication revealed their “report card grades” for each FBS college football team on Wednesday.

Yahoo Sports gave Tennessee a “B”.

That seems like a fair enough grade. The Vols went 7-6 in 2021 — a better season than most expected for UT in Josh Heupel’s first season leading the program.

Tennessee, however, still had plenty of flaws. The red-zone playcalling left a lot to be desired. And the defense couldn’t get off the field at times.

So why my gripe with Yahoo if the grade seems fair?

It’s because of the grade they gave South Carolina.

Yahoo Sports gave the Gamecocks an “A” for their performance in 2021.

I’m sorry, what?

In what world does South Carolina get a better grade than Tennessee in 2021?

Let’s compare the resumés.

Both teams went 7-6 in 2021.

The Vols, however, went 4-4 in SEC play, while South Carolina went 3-5.

Now, the Gamecocks did manage to beat Florida — albeit a Florida team that was falling apart at the time (the Vols played the Gators early in the season….you know, the same UF team that almost beat Alabama).

South Carolina lost to Kentucky and Missouri. Tennessee beat both of those teams on the road.

The Vols had the No. 7 scoring offense in the nation this season and the No. 90 scoring defense. The Gamecocks had the No. 104 scoring offense and the No. 46 scoring defense (South Carolina gave up 24 points per game compared to Tennessee’s 29 points per game. The difference is a product of UT’s up-tempo offense, which gives opposing offenses more scoring chances — even when Tennessee’s offense is operating efficiently because they score so fast.)

The real kicker, of course, is that Tennessee beat South Carolina 45-20 this season. The game wasn’t even close. The Vols dominated the Gamecocks that day.

I just don’t see any way that South Carolina’s performance this season could be graded higher than Tennessee’s.

Yahoo Sports missed the mark big time on this one.
