While Jack Jones has been at the New England Patriots training camp, his upcoming court date has been looming.
Yet, it appears that it has been pushed back, with NBC Sports' Phil Perry reporting that Jones' probable case hearing at East Boston District Court on Friday afternoon has been continued until Sept. 15. He added that Jones is with the team in Green Bay.
Michael McCann, a legal expect, added that this latest news could be a good sign for the Patriots cornerback.
"Could be a sign a plea deal is in the works for Jack Jones (a plea deal is the most likely outcome in how his case ends, with his main goals being to avoid jail time and to give the Patriots reason to not cut him)," McCann tweeted.
During the offseason, Jones was arrested for trying to bring two loaded firearms on the plane at Boston Logan International Airport. The firearms were found in Jones' carry-on luggage and Massachusetts State Police were called to Terminal B when the items were recognized.
He is being charged with two counts of possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport, possession of ammunition without a Firearm Identification Card, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.
Jones was arraigned on June 20, with his attorney Rosemary Scapicchio saying that "He had no intention of brining any guns into Logan Airport that day."
He was originally scheduled to be back in court on Friday, August 18, which was the day before the second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. Now his new court date is set for two days before the Patriots regular season home game against the Miami Dolphins.
Controversy has followed Jones into training camp, with the cornerback getting heated after breaking up a pass along the sideline intended for Kendrick Bourne. Soon after, he was seen walking to the stairs alongside Jabrill Peppers in what was assumed as an attempt to calm him down.
Jones later returned to the fields, but remained on the sidelines and had chats with Jalen Mills and Matt Groh. Yet, he never returned to team drills.
Cornerback coach Mike Pellegrino addressed the situation a few days later.
“It was a great play,” Pellegrino said on Friday morning. “We had a conversation. That conversation is personal, and we’re moving on to training camp (practice) 9 and watch him grow each day forward.”
Jones is entering his second season with the Patriots after being drafted in the fourth round (121st overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft. He finished his rookie season with 30 total tackles (25 solo) with two interceptions and one touchdown.
He has been looking good during training camp, and the possibility of a plea deal will mean that Jones will most likely be with the team for the season.
