Pros:
- Excellent physical traits
Ward's physical traits aren't on Lamar Jackson's level, but his strong arm and mobility are better than most NFL quarterbacks. He's an efficient thrower to all three levels of the field and demands attention from second and third-layer defenders.
- Aggressive passer
Willing to test tight windows, extend plays, and find chunk plays. He's increased his willingness and effectiveness when hunting big plays. Proficient and dangerous when passing deep downfield. - Linear improvement
He has clearly gotten better as a system player and is more willing to play within the scheme when appropriate. He's more proficient at playing a well-rounded style and is less prone to getting into backyard creation. Stats confirm his improved situational play is beyond the eye test, including playing in a clean pocket, conversion downs, and play-action splits. - Offensive engine
He can do more with less around him than the majority of quarterback prospects. His experience with lower-tier programs has given him a chance to compensate for bad playmakers, and his archetype is that of a high-end creator who can drag an offense through rough patches.
Cons:
- Prone to bad turnovers
The knucklehead decisions still exist for Ward. Whether it's him not understanding the coverage due to a bad pre- or post-snap read or a blatant willingness to try impossible throws, most of his turnover-worthy throws are horrible. He has to figure out the reason for repeating mistakes that could upend his career. - Still overtakes the offensive scheme
The Miami experience has helped Ward considerably, and his playmaking is part of what makes him so good. However, he won't fit every NFL team because he'll pass up open throws or fail to anticipate leverage from route concepts in favor of holding onto the ball. His time to throw has to be cut down significantly. - Situational play splits
Ward's splits have improved, but it's odd that his efficiency when throwing with play action rarely leads to big-time throws. He's far more reliant on plays without play action, which points to an offense that doesn't want him resetting his eyes and processing. His play when blitzed versus not blitzed is consistently good, but his turnover rate is uncomfortably high when he's under pressure. He has to know where to go when the blitz is coming.
Player Evaluation:
There's no question that Cam Ward has improved since taking the leap from Incarnate Word to Washington State to Miami. He's become more consistent throughout key areas of his game, and his physical traits are worth banking on as NFL offenses require higher-tier abilities to solve complex defensive schemes. However, his NFL future will boil down to how well Ward can improve his weaknesses as much as build on his positives. He has to recognize defensive alignments and where he can find easy wins, then avoid ego-driven mistakes. He's a high-risk, high-reward prospect.
Player Comparison:
Pro Comp: Deshaun Watson (pre-injuries)
Timing-based offenses won't love how Ward wants to extend plays and thrive in chaotic situations. Finding a balance between being a game manager and taking over the moment is a tough one, and when he's locked in, Ward could show All-Pro potential. He's a dynamic and smooth-throwing quarterback with real guts when it matters, but he'll have to master the details that define sustained success or not.
