Bills say goodbye to their first-round pick in proposed head-scratching move designed to give Josh Allen some more weapons on offense

The Buffalo Bills were featured in a Fox Sports article talking about potential trades that each AFC team should make during the 2026 NFL Draft. For Buffalo, it has them trading away their first-round selection to acquire Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.

The NFL Draft is just weeks away, with the Buffalo Bills currently holding the No. 26 selection. It’s a late first-round pick with many thinking that if the board doesn’t fall the way they want it to, they’ll trade out into getting some additional day two picks.

At least that’s what some think. Others think that Buffalo will be doing something a big more dangerous, and head-scratching if you ask me. Fox Sports wrote an article discussing the NFL player each AFC team should trade for during the 2026 Draft.

For Buffalo, it’s all about maximizing quarterback Josh Allen’s prime by getting rid of the first-round selection and instead shipping it off to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. Thomas Jr. has been in trade talks dating back to the last trade deadline, and with no suitors, Fox Sports believes he will be dealt at the draft.

Fox Sports predicts Buffalo will trade away their first-round pick for Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.

While general manager Brandon Beane didn’t shy away from the team taking a wide receiver high in the draft after trading for former Chicago Bears wide receiver DJ Moore, I don’t think this is what the Bills Mafia was thinking when he made those comments.

For Fox Sports, it’s all about making the offense even that much more dangerous.

“Yes, the Bills already got WR DJ Moore from Chicago for a second-round pick. But they need to do better for QB Josh Allen, so why not go all-in on their biggest need and turn it into a strength? The Jags say they won’t trade Thomas, even after a terrible season, but they don’t have a first-round pick, so if the Bills dangle their first-rounder, maybe Jacksonville will change its mind.

With Allen, two top receivers and RB James Cook, the Bills’ offense might be impossible to stop. And if they can finally end their Super Bowl drought, it would be well worth the price.” – Ralph Vacchiano

Brandon Beane would be under fire if he decided to trade away the first-round pick for Brian Thomas Jr.

Thomas Jr. is coming off a less-than-desirable season, and with the recent addition of wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, Thomas Jr. saw his production take a noticeable dip. It’s just that he’s not worth a first-round selection in my opinion, and this isn’t a move that I could see the Bills making on draft night. Beane would be a fool to push this through.

There are plenty of team needs, and plenty of young wide receiver talent Buffalo could take at the No. 26 position if they so choose, instead of outright trading for a big ol’ question mark that is Thomas Jr., and what his role looks like long-term.

After trading the second-round pick away to acquire Moore, it would just be foolish for the organization to trade away their first-round pick for Thomas Jr at this stage of his career. No disrespect to Thomas Jr., I can’t see this coming to fruition.

This feels like a moef that sounds flashy on paper but falls apart the second you look a little closer. Buffalo didn’t grind through a tough cap situation and reshuffle the roster just to take a gamble like this.

If Beane is serious about maximizing Allen’s prime, the smarter play is keeping that first-round pick and adding a young, controllable difference-maker, not overpaying for a question mark. Come draft night, don’t be surprised if Buffalo sticks to the plan and lets the board come to them instead of forcing a move that could backfire in a big way.
