The NFL hands Joe Burrow a firm warning if concerning trend continues to impact the Cincinnati Bengals this season
The Cincinnati Bengals enter the 2026 season with Joe Burrow still firmly planted among the NFL’s elite. NFL personnel are also sending Burrow a warning regarding the one thing that has been holding him back in recent years.
The Cincinnati Bengals enter the 2026 season with their franchise quarterback still firmly planted among the NFL’s elite.
ESPN’s annual top 10 quarterback rankings, compiled from surveying dozens of NFL executives, coaches, and scouts, slotted Joe Burrow at No. 4.
Burrow lands behind Josh Allen at No. 1, Patrick Mahomes at No. 2, and reigning MVP Matthew Stafford at No. 3.
Joe Burrow’s elite traits remain elite according to NFL personnel
A lot about the Bengals sometimes gets misconstrued, even at the NFL level. But the league appears to be on the same page regarding who Burrow remains to be as a player.
One unnamed NFL coordinator offered what might be the most accurate description of Burrow’s value.
Burrow doesn’t play in a system. He is the system. He’s the whole thing.

I think this is often overlooked, especially when the discourse around Burrow centers on the weapons at his disposal. Yes, it’s an advantage to play with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, and Mike Gesicki and Andrei Iosivas as ancillary options only helps.
Burrow also is equipped with one of the most accurate arms in this generation, possessing the processing speed and decision-making ability to consistently put the ball where it needs to go. You can do so much as a play caller because of that, and others in the league know it.
Such a quick decision-maker. The ball is out. That ball is OUT. It’s so frustrating. And when it isn’t out, he’s just waiting for a deep ball to develop. He’s got accuracy, arm strength – a winner.

Burrow was ranked as high as No. 1 and as low as No. 6 across individual ballots. He found himself ahead of the likes of Lamar Jackson (No. 5), Justin Herbert (No. 7), and Drake May (No. 8), but he also dropped one spot from his No. 3 ranking a year ago. The reason why is obvious if you’ve been paying attention to Bengals football in recent years.
Burrow’s durability concerns are firmly on the minds of everyone
The obvious red flag on Burrow’s resume is still his injury concerns. The 29-year old has missed significant time in two of the last three seasons. It helped keep Cincinnati out of the postseason during that span, and it can only continue for so long before it really starts to impact Burrow’s standing among the elite QBs.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, “several voters” omitted Burrow from their top five because he has missed 16 games since the 2023 season.
It’s one thing to be unlucky. Burrow’s lack of durability has become an unfortunate trend. It can only go on for so long before it overtakes all the great things in his game.
Burrow may not possess every tool that Mahomes, Allen, or even Stafford bring to the table. He doesn’t need to. He’s one of the best passers in the game with accuracy, processing speed, and pocket movement that’s unique in its own regard.
The Bengals are banking on seeing that for a full season this year. If they do, we won’t hear about many ballots with him out of the top five next year.
But if another injury derails another season, he could fall out of the top five altogether.
