David Njoku was a fan favorite kind of player for most of the last decade for the Cleveland Browns. Now, it looks like he could be heading elsewhere in the AFC.

Former Cleveland Browns TE David Njoku remains one of the top free agents available out there. It’s been a rather quiet free agency for Njoku and he’s still in search of a new NFL home.

Njoku has spent all nine years of his NFL career with the Browns. The only other team he’s had reported interest from this offseason is the Baltimore Ravens. Njoku visited with the Ravens last month and will visit with another AFC team next weekend.

David Njoku could finally be signing a new NFL contract this coming week

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Njoku will take a visit on Monday with the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers notably have QB Justin Herbert throwing the ball and it’d be a nice opportunity for Njoku in Year 10. Oronde Gadsden and Charlie Kolar are the top two tight ends on the Chargers, with Kolar being more of a blocker.

The rise of Harold Fannin Jr. with the Browns made Njoku expendable. Cleveland signed Jack Stoll in free agency, then drafted two rookie tight ends with Joe Royer and Carsen Ryan. The door is closed on a return to Cleveland for Njoku, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if a deal with Los Angeles comes together.

Njoku only played in 12 games last year and had 293 receiving yards and four touchdowns. The veteran tight end is outside of his prime now, but can still provide strong complementary play at the position. Njoku can still be a starter in the league with his ability as a blocker and pass catcher.

It’s been since 2023 that Njoku has been himself when he had his best year with 81 catches, 882 receiving yards, and six touchdowns. Injuries, poor quarterback play, and a stagnant offense have all played a part in Njoku’s decline.

Four contracts aren’t easy to come by in the NFL and Njoku is closing in on making it happen. After being a first-round pick out of Miami in 2017, he’s had a pretty strong career. Now, it looks like he could get a chance to play with the best quarterback he’s had.
