Cleveland Browns get a breath of fresh air on the injury front coming out of the bye week, and before the trade deadline
The Browns will get some help on offense coming out of the bye.
The Cleveland Browns went into the bye week knowing exactly what they are at this point: a 2-6 football team with a great defense and a bad offense. Cleveland has the worst offense in the NFL while boasting one of the league’s best defenses, led by Myles Garrett.
Cleveland has to improve offensively if it wants to add any more wins this season. The Browns are averaging just 279 yards of offense per game and scoring only 15.8 points per contest. That just isn’t good enough at the pro level, and the Browns won’t win many games as a result.
Cedric Tillman’s return is a good step for the Browns
It was announced Monday that the Browns designated wide receiver Cedric Tillman to return to practice after missing the last four games on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Tillman has not played since the Week 4 loss to the Detroit Lions and will be a welcome addition back to the offense. To make room for Tillman, the Browns released safety Damontae Kazee from the roster.
In four games this season, Tillman has 11 receptions for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The hope for the Browns is that Tillman can emerge as a reliable second option to Jerry Jeudy, but neither player has met expectations so far. With Tillman’s 6-foot-3 frame and catch radius returning to the lineup, this could be a chance for him to finally get going.
Tillman’s 339 receiving yards in 11 games last season remain his best production as a Brown heading into his third year. Cleveland has been relying on players like Jamari Thrash and Isaiah Bond to step up during Tillman’s absence. The Browns have also leaned heavily on rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr. alongside David Njoku.
Tillman has battled injuries in each of his three seasons with the Browns, and this year appears to be following the same trend. If he’s able to return to action against the New York Jets on Sunday — Cleveland’s first game with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees calling plays — it would count as a small win coming out of the bye week.
