Cleveland Browns could soon have a new quarterback domino in front of them to weigh with recent news
It looks like the Cleveland Browns have a full quarterback room right now because they do. However, Cleveland could end up adding another quarterback in an uncommon way before the offseason comes to a close.
The Cleveland Browns don’t have a starting quarterback until they do, that’s just how it goes.
Despite having a full quarterback room with four players after drafting Taylen Green on Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft, there are still major questions about the future of the room in Cleveland.
Deshaun Watson is most likely to get the keys to the offense to start the year. Then, it’s Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel behind him as it currently stands. There’s another offseason domino set to fall at some point that could leave the Browns with a decision to make on another quarterback.
The Browns could soon take a look at the supplemental draft for a quarterback
Cleveland would have to move off of someone currently in the room, but the Browns may be in the mix for Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby if he enters the rarely used supplemental draft. On Tuesday, the NCAA denied Sorsby’s request to reinstate his eligibility for the 2026 college football season. Sorsby’s last hope of playing in college again is in the court of appeals against the NCAA.
Sorsby was the top quarterback in the transfer portal this past winter, coming from Cincinnati, and received a large chunk of cash to transfer to Texas Tech. The current Red Raider entered a rehab program for a gambling addiction after reports surfaced of him gambling on college football games when he was at Indiana. Due to the integrity of the sport, the NCAA isn’t going to allow him to play again if they have any say about it.
What would Brendan Sorsby bring to the Browns?
If Sorsby came out in the 2026 cycle he would have pushed Ty Simpson for the QB2 spot and likely been a second-round pick at worst. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound quarterback is a terrific athlete and brings dual-threat ability when he steps on the field. In 2025 with the Bearcats, Sorsby had 2,800 passing yards, 27 passing touchdowns, and just five interceptions. He added another nine touchdowns on the ground to go along with 580 rushing yards.
There’s little doubt that Sorsby would immediately have the highest ceiling for the Browns at the most important position in the game. It all comes down to whether they would want to spend a draft pick from next year’s draft that is expected to be loaded, and if Sorsby actually enters the supplemental draft.
It’s been since 2021 there’s been a supplemental draft and the deadline is June 22. Sorsby needs a final answer on his college eligibility by then, and if he gets it, we could see him selected to the NFL sometime in July.
