Browns HC Todd Monken gets honest with his first impression of Cleveland’s new rookie QB Taylen Green
Rookie minicamp is taking place for the Browns this weekend and it’s the first look at the newcomers. Cleveland got its new QB on the field for the first time and Todd Monken gave his honest take with a first impression.
The Cleveland Browns hope to take a step forward in Todd Monken’s first season as a head coach after the team went 5-12 in Kevin Stefanski’s final go-around. A big part of any improvement will come from how the quarterback position looks.
Cleveland’s starter is likely to be either Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders. Dillon Gabriel is the third quarterback in the room, and the Browns added former Arkansas QB Taylen Green in the recent 2026 NFL Draft.
Browns HC Todd Monken gives first leg update on rookie QB Taylen Green
Friday was the first day of rookie minicamp for the Browns, which meant the first look at the sixth-round pick Green. Monken commented on what he’s seen so far from the newcomer.
“I think he’s carried over the Zoom meetings to this morning’s meetings and then walk [through],” Monken stated. “He operated the offense pretty well, I mean, for someone who hadn’t been a part of it. Eyes weren’t always in the right spot, but you can see a couple of times some of the things he can do with his feet when plays break down. So that’s exciting to see.”
Green brings legit 4.36 40-yard dash speed to the field and his running ability was on display from the start. At 6-foot-6, 230 pounds, Green looks every bit the part of the position, and his physical abilities are impressive. Still, Green is a raw talent who needs work in the mental part of the game and has to continue improving his throwing ability.
Cleveland is likely to have Green as its No. 3 quarterback in 2026, at least to start. The idea of using him in the red zone and goal-to-go situations is intriguing, and the door seems open.
“Probably too early to tell that, but I could say that – anybody with that kind of athleticism, I think should he progress in certain areas of his game, I think there would be a possibility of him, whether it’s short yardage, you know, once you get in the low red zone, maybe some third down stuff that we could utilize,” Monken stated.
Browns fans are going to get a lot of Green in the preseason at the very least. I expect he’ll put some wow moments out there, and there will inevitably be some lows. While he needs plenty of development, Green brings an exciting quarterback base to work with in the NFL, and it was a good Day 3 selection for Cleveland.
