Todd Monken issues strong update on where the Cleveland Browns’ starting QB competition stands between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders
We’ve made it through the first day of mandatory minicamp for the Cleveland Browns and have our first real quarterback update as a result.
Tuesday marked an important day for the Cleveland Browns with mandatory minicamp starting. As expected, all eyes were on the starting quarterback battle for Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders.
Both quarterbacks notably split reps on Tuesday and that’ll take place on all three days of minicamp this week. It once felt like there was a chance head coach Todd Monken could decide on a starting quarterback during mandatory minicamp, but it’s not going to happen.
Todd Monken issues a strong statement on where the Browns’ starting QB battle stands
“I’m not gonna name a number one, so that I am not gonna name. Chances are that’s not gonna, I shouldn’t say that. Chances are I will not,” Monken said of naming a starting QB during mandatory minicamp. “Now, once we get to the fall, we’ll have to dissect the reps how we see fit. I just don’t see it after the way Shedeur has played and Deshaun played. They both played well enough to earn the right to compete to start.”
Watson is back and healthy, battling to be the starting quarterback once again for Cleveland. The veteran quarterback has never played in more than seven games in a season for the Browns over the last four campaigns. Meanwhile, Sanders is looking to grab the starting job with a new head coach after ending 2026 as the Browns’ starting quarterback.
Both quarterbacks connected on big plays on Tuesday to WR Denzel Boston and WR Tylan Wallace specifically.
We are now looking at a quarterback decision coming during training camp in August. Following the three-day mandatory minicamp, the Browns will break until late July when training camp ramps up. At this time, both Watson and Sanders clearly have a chance to win the job.
