Who are realistic options for the Cowboys in the third round? Best players Dallas could target in Day 2 of the draft
The Dallas Cowboys aren’t scheduled to pick until late in the third round but they’re candidates to move up at any point. So who are some names to keep in our radar ahead of Day 2?
That first round was a wild ride. So no, I don’t think we can accurately predict who the Dallas Cowboys will end up picking in Day 2—especially since they’re not scheduled to pick until pick No. 92.
However, below are several names on my radar for Friday night. Keep in mind, with three fourth round picks to their name, the Cowboys have the ammunition to move up if they want to. Let’s dive in.
LB Josiah Trotter, Missouri
- A to Z Sports expected draft position: 62
- A to Z Sports career projection: Eventual good starter
The son of former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, Josiah was a starting middle linebacker at Missouri. Though he would be unlikely to start right away, Trotter has experience rocking the green dot, which is a role that is still unfilled in Dallas.
Trotter is a consistent tackler and could be a starting mike with time. I’d consider him a trade up candidate for the Cowboys, who will enter Day 2 with three fourth-round picks.
LB Anthony Hill, Texas
- A to Z Sports expected draft position: 50
- A to Z Sports career projection: Eventual good starter
Hill rocked No. 0 at Texas because he looked up to DeMarvion Overshown. You can see that in his play, as his range and speed is what pops out the most on film. He’s more of a cover linebacker with blitz upside than anything else.
The Cowboys could get a similar player to Overshown in Hill.
CB Keionte Scott, Miami
- A to Z Sports expected draft position: 80
- A to Z Sports career projection: Immediate quality starter
Scott has the versatility to carry out plenty of roles at the NFL level. That includes playing inside or outside and even safety. The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, for instance, listed him as a safety in his draft guide. Though the Cowboys already got Caleb Downs, who is expected to play nickel, Scott could open up their options on the secondary.
EDGE Romello Height, Texas Tech
- A to Z Sports expected draft position: 74
- A to Z Sports career projection: Eventual average starter
Though Height isn’t the best run defender of the class, he’s an explosive pass rusher who could earn a rotational role in obvious passing downs. His production was solid at Texas Tech with 69 pressures in his one year starting at Texas Tech. I’m not sure the Cowboys would double dip here but Height is likely to be within range.
WR Elijah Sarratt, Indiana
- A to Z Sports expected draft position: 71
- A to Z Sports career projection: Average backup or rotational player
Sarratt is one of the players that followed coach Curt Cignetti from James Madison to Indiana. He delivered in the transition thanks to his physical way of playing the position. He’s going to be a red zone weapon at the next level thanks to his ability to bring down contested catches.
CB Malik Muhammad, Texas
- A to Z Sports expected draft position: 99
- A to Z Sports career projection: Eventual average starter
The Cowboys did their homework on Muhammad, who makes up with physicality and violence what he lacks in speed. That makes him a good run defender and he has the upside to become a solid man-cover cornerback at the NFL level.
Other names to watch:
- CB Charles Demmings, SF Austin
- S Jalon Kilgore, South Carolina
- iOL Beau Stephens, Iowa
- iOL Logan Jones, Iowa
- TE Oscar Delp, Georgia
- TE Michael Trigg, Baylor
- OT Caleb Tiernan, Northwestern
