Roster Cut: Dallas Cowboys move on from former preseason standout to make room for Von Miller

The Dallas Cowboys had to make a roster move to be able to officialize Von Miller’s signing with the team. Unfortunately for a young wide receiver, that means he needs to look for another team.

Following the news of Von Miller agreeing to terms with the Dallas Cowboys, one thing became clear: the team had to make room on the 91-man roster.

It’s the cold nature of the sport, and one that’s particularly prevalent in August. On Monday, the Cowboys announced they’re waiving a former preseason standout as a result.

Cowboys waive WR Traeshon Holden

The Cowboys waived WR Traeshon Holden on Monday.

The news is tough for the player that was a preseason standout in 2025. It isn’t surprising, though. Holden struggled to make noise in training camp and a muffed punt in the Cowboys’ preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks did not help.

After initially letting the ball bounce inside the five-yard line, Holden seemed to force a return. Instead, he muffed it and the Seahawks recovered right outside the Cowboys’ end zone.

“I know he’s disappointed,” Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said postgame. “He knew he made a mistake. Traeshon wants to win, he’s competing. I think anytime players step up you can be affected by that. But Traeshon is a pro, and he’ll bounce back.”

Unfortunately for Holden, bouncing back will be something he has to do with another team. Holden arrived at the Cowboys as an undrafted rookie in 2025 after playing college football in a couple of big-time programs: Alabama and Oregon.

He signed a futures contract with the Cowboys last January after spending his rookie year on the practice squad.

What’s next

For now, the Cowboys move on with a wide receiver competition at the bottom of the depth chart spearheaded by Jonathan Mingo and undrafted rookie Camden Brown.

And with this move, the Cowboys can officialize Miller’s arrival when he signs his one-year deal worth $5.5 million.

Come Aug. 30 at 6:00 p.m. ET, the Cowboys must reduce their roster to a maximum of 53 players.
