The 2024 NFL Draft is next week and this is the time of year that Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes has a history of going all in. Sometimes when you go all in, you might have to trade a player. In fact, the Lions went all in and traded a player last year. They sent D'Andre Swift over to the Eagles.
Could the Lions be moving a player again this year? If so, we have three players that make the most sense for the Lions to trade. Here they are and why.
Malcolm Rodriguez
We'll start it off with a fan favorite. Everyone has loved Rodrigo since his rookie year when he was a big part of Hard Knocks and wound up becoming a starter. In 2023 the Lions drafted Jack Campbell, Alex Anzalone had the best year of his career, Jalen Reeves-Maybin was solid when he was on defense and Derrick Barnes really came along. Rodriguez sort of found himself as the odd man out.
The Lions mostly had him as a special teams contributor and a fullback. He could be a player that's in demand for a team that is more linebacker needy than the Lions and it would actually be a good thing for him to go somewhere where he could get a lot more playing time and maybe even be a starter again.
Kalif Raymond
I don't want to see Kalif Raymond go just like you don't, but the fact of the matter is that his usage really dropped off in 2023 and the Lions could get what they used to get from Raymond out of Jameson Williams. Couple that with the belief that the Lions will more than likely draft a receiver and guys like Donovan Peoples-Jones and Antoine Green's roles should be bigger. The Lions also signed Tre'Quan Smith before free agency and he was solid veteran contributor for the Saints when Dan Campbell was there.
Raymond is the Lions punt returner, but they do have Maurice Alexander on the roster as well and he has a decent history of being a return man in the NFL and UFL.
James Mitchell
Sometimes you just have to come to terms with the idea that you missed on a prospect. I'm not talking about Brad Holmes here, I'm talking about me. I guess I'm also talking about Holmes too. I thought Mitchell would be a huge part of this team. He was a draft crush for me in 2022 after seeing what he was able to do at Virginia Tech. That just hasn't happened. Most of the time you forget he's on the roster.
Brock Wright is back and so is Shane Zylstra. It's clear that the Lions don't see Mitchell as someone that can have a future here. Instead of cutting him in August, the Lions can try to see what they can get for him. Even if it's a seventh round pick, that's a win.
Panic at the Stadium: How the NFL helps rookies fight against the mental health stigma
On February 2, 2024, I was in Mobile, Alabama checking off a big moment on my career checklist: I had just finished up a successful week at my first Senior Bowl. Myself and the rest of the A to Z Sports crew that were there and we had a productive time at the practices all […]
