The Lions would be willing to trade it all away from the right player. But it has to be the right player in every single sense.

Detroit Lions fans have wondered for a long time why their team won’t just go the route that Brad Holmes comes from.

We’re talking about the Rams route, where he worked under GM Les Snead, who infamously runs the franchise under this narrative of “F them picks.” Meaning, “let’s go get the superstar or the really good player. We’ll have draft picks to use in later drafts. We want to win now.”

This doesn’t really happen as much as I think people think it happens. The Rams have really only done three of these since Brad Holmes came to Detroit five years ago. The Matthew Stafford trade, the Von Miller trade, and the Tretn McDuffie trade. The Lions have never done anything like that, perse. But would they?

Brad Holmes says the Lions would absolutley make an “F them picks” trade if they felt the player was right

“Absolutely, yeah, if it’s the right guy,” Holmes said Monday. You guys know me. I mean, I thought you guys get mad at me sometimes. I do that too much sometimes. But no, if we have that kind of conviction for a player, absolutely, we’re gonna go and get them.”

What Holmes is probably referring to when he says that we in the media think he does that too much, is that Holmes has classically been a GM who is going to go get his guy. The trade up for Jameson Williams, the moves for Jahmyr Gibbs and Jack Campbell, the trade ups for Terrion Arnold, Sione Vaki, and Giovanni Manu. If they want him, they’re going to get him.

I mean, if you really think about it, the dude has been saying “F them picks” for years. Just not in the way you want him to. Which is going to trade for an already established superstar player.

But that doesn’t change the sentiment. The Lions have been saying it for years during free agency, the draft, and the trade deadline. They’re not going to make a move for a player unless he is the right guy and checks all the boxes.

Getting a guy with a name is super easy. But does he fit the scheme? Does he fit the culture? Does he fit the locker room? Does he fit the city? Does he fit the financials? There are numerous things to think about here.

So if you’re hoping the Lions sell out for Myles Garrett or something, think twice. He checks most of the boxes, but he definitely doesn’t check the financial one. The Lions need a guy who can do all of that. I’m not sure that guy is actually available right now.
