Earlier on Tuesday, the Detroit Lions added some more depth to their practice squad by signing former Bengals tackle Devin Cochran. That wasn’t the only move the Lions made on Tuesday. They’re adding linebacker Monty Rice to the practice squad as well.

Rice is a former third-round pick who was taken by the Tennessee Titans in the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons there and was mostly in a rotational role, though he did start 10 games while on their roster.

In his final two seasons with the Titans, he suffered two different season-ending injuries, and they waived him during the 2023 season. Since then, he’s spent time with the Saints, Falcons, and Patriots’ practice squads. He played three games and started one for New England last year and was with them this summer, but did not make the 53-man roster.

Lions part with long-time veteran linebacker Anthony Pittman

In addition to that move, the Lions are parting with Anthony Pittman. Except for short terms with the Jaguars and Commanders, the Wayne State grad has spent most of his career with the Lions and played 56 games for Detroit.

The Lions are deep at linebacker, so they may have felt it was ok to let him go. Also, letting a guy like Pittma go feels like a good sign for Trevor Nowaske being able to come back this week. We’ll see where that goes on Wednesday when the team returns to practice.
