NFL Draft analyst projects the Lions as one of the teams that could land troubled Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby in the NFL supplemental draft

Detroit Lions are being linked to a quarterback once viewed as a potential first-round talent. The fit sounds intriguing on paper, but one major off-field issue makes it hard to see Detroit getting involved.

The Detroit Lions are in a pretty good spot at quarterback right now with Jared Goff as their starter till at least the end of the decade. Beyond him, they have veteran Teddy Bridgewater and UDFA Luke Altmyer, who is gaining some hype at the way too early moment. So they probably don’t need an extra guy.

But an interesting option is presenting itself in Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who will be entering the supplemental draft after failing to get his college eligibility back. Sorsby was expected to go in the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft had he been eligible.

So the Lions could potentially have a chance to find their successor to Goff in Sorsby, who is just 22 years old. At least that’s what draft analyst Bill Sparks thinks. He included the Lions in his list of teams that could go after Sorsby.

I get the idea that he’s lying out there, and if any other player had fallen into their hands, you could see why they would jump at the opportunity. But Sorsby is heading to the supplemental draft, where the Lions haven’t picked anyone since 1982, for pretty bad reasons.

Sorsby admitted to violating NCAA gambling rules by placing thousands of sports bets totaling roughly $90,000, including wagers involving his own team while he was at Indiana. There has never been any indication that he tried to influence the outcome of games, and he has since entered treatment for a gambling addiction, but that is still going to give a lot of teams pause. The Lions are one of the teams that would obviously find this very concerning.

You might bring up Jameson Williams and say they might look past something like this, but what Williams did and what Sorsby did are two wildly different things. Williams bet on non-NFL sporting events while in an NFL facility. It’s still insane he got in trouble for that. Sorsby went full Pete Rose and bet on his own sport, and then went beyond Rose and bet on his own team. A team he started games for.

All respect is given to Sorsby for getting the help he needs, and best of luck to him on that, but this is going to hang over his head forever, and any time the team that picks him up loses, or he throws an interception, people are going to wonder. The Lions have no room for that at this time. Even if he is a first-round talent.
