The better way to go for the Lions is to just be patient

For some fans of the Detroit Lions, this won’t land. After the first big touchdown the Lions allow against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night, I guarantee there will be someone on one of he social media platforms commenting something like “you sure about that?” below this. I’m sure this could get tweeted about by Freezing Cold Takes as well. But the fact is…

The Lions don’t need to trade for a cornerback at the NFL trade deadline

Let’s take a look at this from a few different angles. The first is on the injury side. Yes, the Lions are going into this game against the Bucs with nothing but backups. But then you hit the bye week right after. Terrion Arnold has already returned to practice, Avonte Maddox is expected to be back after the bye, and D.J. Reed is eligible to come off injured reserve after their Week 9 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

So when is this new guy going to play? You’re trading away picks for a starting cornerback to play more than likely one game, and then that guy has to take a backseat. It just doesn’t make any sense. Who’s really out there right now? Let’s look at the list.

There’s Seattle Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen. OK, that’s the end of the list. He seems to be the only cornerback that anyone is putting in actual trade talks right now, and he is having a career-worst season. Plus, it’s hard to see a 4-2 team trading a cornerback right now.

I know this isn’t what anyone wants to hear after the Lions’ loss to the Chiefs, but the corners weren’t the ones getting beaten. It was the linebackers who allowed 151 passing yards in that game. Yes, it was partially because the Lions played a different style of defense, but it’s notable that this team allowed just one explosive pass all game.

For the “Arnold isn’t good crowd,” he was on a roll before his injury. In his last three games, he had allowed a combined eight catches on 14 targets for 108 yards and had two pass breakups. So no, you don’t need to replace him.

This team will be OK, and they have a bunch of guys with a bunch of experience. They’ll make it work for the short time that they have to make it work.
