Back in late October, Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Willaims was involved in a traffic stop where officers were informed by Williams that he had a gun under his seat.
Williams was cuffed and put in the back of a Detroit Police squad car and questioned. He was then let go and that was that. The Detroit Police Department then opened up an internal affairs case to see if the officers let him go based on him being a Lions player.
Ultimately the internal affairs case resulted in no charges being filed for anyone and that was that from the side of the law. There were still some concerns that Williams could face some sort of discipline from the league. We now know that the league will not be pursuing anything there.
That's big news to hear at the start of what is expected to be a big offseason for him. He's either going to get an extension or have his fifth-year option picked up.
The latter seems like the much more likely outcome since it will give the Lions a chance to assess Williams for one more year and it will give Williams a chance to go out and have a full season with no suspensions, injuries, or drama of any kind. If he can do that, he'll maximize his chances to get paid big.
A fifth-year option for Williams would run the Lions $15,161,000 in 2026. That is fully guaranteed and he could get that in addition to getting an extension after the 2025 season. We'll see soon enough what the Lions will do. The deadline for fifth-year options is May 1st.
