The Detroit Lions have been talking to a lot of different positions at the NFL Combine this week, but quarterback is one that maybe most felt they would avoid. That has not been the case. The Lions have met with multiple quarterbacks in Indianapolis including Alabama's Jalen Milroe.

The Lions are obviously set with Jared Goff and he is this team's starter until 2027 or 2028 for sure. Where the Lions do not appear to be set is with a backup quarterback that they have shot to develop into a potential starter someday.

While Hendon Hooker is on the roster right now, he is 27-years-old. If the Lions were looking to make a change in 2027 or 2028, Hooker is a guy that would be 29 or 30 by that time. The Lions would likely have to turn right around and try to find another quarterback to replace him. It's just not a good long term strategy at this point.

Along with that, the Lions have essentially been telling us all along that this has not been working out.

The Lions spent the entire summer telling us that they didn't think he was ready quite yet. The Lions talked all summer about whether or not they would keep three quarterbacks, and that goes up until the final day before cutdown time.

Ultimately Nate Sudfeld was really bad and the Lions had to make a move there, but the interest for another backup was always there. In November the Lions reportedly had "significant interest" in signing former Giants starter Daniel Jones. That didn't wind up happening as Jones chose to go to the Vikings.

One month later Teddy Bridgewater came out of retirement and the Lions signed him. Dan Campbell talked about how the Lions were going into "a different world" and how he had a lot of trust for Bridgewater.

Then in the playoffs, the Lions made Hooker inactive and the emergency quarterback and went with Bridgewater as their number two. A guy who was retired up until a few weeks before that game.

With Milroe the Lions get a 22-year-old quarterback who has played in a pro system that's much more evolved than the Tennessee system. Milroe is also a guy that can be mobile and make tacklers miss.

In Detroit, Milroe would get a chance to work with Mark Brunell and two other former NFL quarterbacks in Bruce Gradkowski and Marques Tuiasosopo. He's also getting to learn on the job from Jared Goff too. That is a solid group of guys that can spend time developing him and getting ready to take on the starting role in 2027 or 2028 when he'll be 25-years-old.

In terms of when the Lions could get Milroe, he's projected to be a second to third round pick. The Lions would have shot at him with the 60th pick, but they would also have a shot in the early third if they were to move up.

In terms of other quarterbacks the Lions have spoken to, right now we can confirm that they have met with Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan.
