Chase Claypool tryout opens can of worms for potential veteran WR additions Packers could still explore after the draft
The wide receiver market still has intriguing veteran options, and the Packers showed they are willing to add more pieces to this young group.
The Green Bay Packers pulled a true surprise on Friday bringing in veteran wide receiver Chase Claypool for a tryout during the team’s rookie minicamp. Claypool, whom the Packers tried to acquire four years ago via trade, was the only player with more than one accrued NFL season in the activity.
While there are simple reasons to understand why Claypool would be there and why the Packers’ front office likes him, he is certainly not the only veteran wide receiver available out there. And that could be more of a focus now, since the Packers ultimately didn’t sign Claypool after all.
The Packers lost Romeo Doubs in free agency and traded Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles. Because they didn’t draft any receivers, there’s still a clear spot for another receiver — although undrafted rookie J. Michael Sturdivant could compete for it, a veteran addition is a realistic scenario at this point.
So, let’s dive into the wide receiver market and check out some players who are still in free agency at this point of the offseason.
Jauan Jennings
We’ve already talked about Jennings here, and he probably overplayed his market. The former San Francisco 49er knows the offensive system, and it would be easy for him to carve out a role replacing Doubs — but it only makes sense if he takes a prove-it deal to go back to free agency next offseason.
Deebo Samuel
The Washington Commanders traded a fifth-rounder for Samuel last offseason and cut him now due to financial reasons, but he was fairly productive last year. He’s not an efficient receiver at this point, and had a reasonable 1.66 yards per route run in 2025, but his familiarity with the scheme and his ability to stress the defense horizontally could be intriguing for Matt LaFleur. Age is already a factor here, though, as Deebo is 30.
Tyreek Hill
Tyreek is 32 and is coming off major knee injuries, which includes a torn ACL. He’s expected to be back at some point in 2026, and the Miami Dolphins cut him as part of their rebuild. It’s hard to foresee the Packers actually pulling this off, but in his last healthy season (2024), Hill had 81 receptions for 959 yards and six touchdowns — he had had 119 catches for 1,799 yards and 13 TDs in 2023. He succeeded in a similar offensive structure under Mike McDaniel, so you can easily see the fit and there’s no need to project much — as long as he’s fully healthy and still reasonably athletic for his own standards.
Stefon Diggs
Diggs fully recovered from an ACL injury suffered in 2024 and had a strong 2025 season for the New England Patriots, producing 1,013 yards and helping them reach the Super Bowl. Diggs might not be a true No. 1 receiver anymore, but even at 32 he’s still highly efficient. Last year, Diggs had 2.42 yards per route run and generated a 113.9 passer rating when targeted.
Stefon Diggs stats in 2025
Lonely season for the New England Patriots
- 100 targets
- 85 receptions
- 1,013 yards
- 4 touchdowns
- 2.42 yards per route run
- 8.7 average depth of target
- 2.3 drop percentage
- 113.9 passer rating when targeted
Keenan Allen
Allen spent a season in the NFC North in 2024 for the Chicago Bears, but returned to the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025. He’s the oldest of this bunch at 34, but can still be a viable role player as a big slot. Allen has nine consecutive seasons with at least 700 receiving yards — 777 yards and four touchdowns last year for the Chargers.
