Packers have 5 fascinating reunion candidates who general manager Brian Gutekunst could target for the 2026 season
Green Bay still has some needs on the roster, and bringing back some familiar faces doesn’t always sound like the worst idea.
The Green Bay Packers have the core of their roster in place, in particular after the first wave of free agency and the draft. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean general manager Brian Gutekunst couldn’t explore more additions — and that’s something he acknowledged after the draft.
“I don’t know if I ever feel like I’ve checked every box, because I don’t know if anything’s ever complete,” Gutekunst said. “That doesn’t mean I don’t feel really good about what our team looks like. This is 365.”
Earlier this year, we made an article with seven former Packers who could be back in some capacity for 2026. And this is an updated version of that list.
CB Rasul Douglas
If the Packers want a cheaper, short-term alternative at CB, Douglas could be interesting. It didn’t make much sense to bring him back last season because Jeff Hafley’s scheme is totally different from Joe Barry’s, where Douglas thrived. But Jonathan Gannon brings a more similar philosophy, and Douglas is coming from a strong season with the Dolphins. The Packers did address the CB spot in the draft with Brandon Cisse and Domani Jackson, but both are young, developmental pieces. Getting Douglas as a bridge piece could work well.
DT TJ Slaton
Slaton is still under contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, but a trade wouldn’t be totally out of the equation after the Bengals acquired Dexter Lawrence. The Packers badly missed Slaton’s run ability last year, and bringing back a heavier defensive lineman who can stop the run isn’t a bad idea. The Packers signed Javon Hargrave and drafted Chris McClellan, but none of them is exactly the type of piece Slaton is.
CB Trevon Diggs
Diggs finished the season on the Packers last year, playing two games — and with significant snaps in only one of them, the meaningless regular season finale against the Minnesota Vikings. The Packers ended up cutting him because his contract was too expensive. But it’s May, Diggs is still available, so a team-friendly deal may be a bigger possibility at this point.
QB/TE/WR/RB Taysom Hill
This is a cool one, because Hill was just a third-string rookie quarterback in 2017 scoring preseason rushing touchdowns. The Packers cut him with the expectation of bringing him back to the practice squad, but the New Orleans Saints claimed him and Sean Payton transformed Hill into one of the most versatile and electric weapons in the NFL. Now he’s already 35, but the athleticism is still there to some extent — and Matt LaFleur has the creativity to take advantage of it.
TE John FitzPatrick
This is the most realistic one because the Packers would probably love to have FitzPatrick back. The problem here is that the tight end tore his Achilles in December, so it takes time to recover and to get fully healthy. When it happens, don’t be surprised if Green Bay signs the 26-year-old back. Especially with a declared need for an in-line tight end.
