Packers assistant says quiet part out loud and unintentionally reveals how new signing will elevate Jordan Love
Green Bay added backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor earlier this week. Besides being a viable player on the field, Taylor will help Love to keep progressing.
The Green Bay Packers made a surprising series of decisions earlier this week. First, the team signed veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor. As a corresponding move, released former incumbent backup Desmond Ridder. While getting an athletic player to the QB room is important, there’s more behind the decision.
Tyrod Taylor can truly help Jordan Love
Since Jordan Love took over as a starter back in 2023, he’s only had young, developmental QBs behind him on the depth chart — Sean Clifford and Malik Willis have been the primary backups. Meanwhile, Tyrod Taylor has been in the NFL since 2011, when Love was 12.
“He’s only been here a couple days, but the cool part, when he walked in the room, you could feel the presence, the confidence, the composure,” Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy said. “He’s seen a lot. He’s been in a lot of different systems. And so that part of it, just how quickly he’s able to pick up on things.”
Mentally, Tyrod Taylor will be able to help Jordan Love to keep progressing and to prepare for big games.
On the field, even though he had a tough season for the New York Jets last year, he is still a competent and athletic option.
“He showed up and we were going to drills and stuff, and he’s a true pro,” Getsy added. “It was pretty cool to see. And as far as the juice, he’s definitely still got that.”
A 36-year-old quarterback, Taylor is ready to help and contribute however he can. It’s a solid combination. Tyrod Taylor has already started 61 regular season games in the NFL, but he has also backed up quarterbacks like Joe Flacco, Baker Mayfield, Justin Herbert, and Aaron Rodgers. He has a Super Bowl ring as a backup for the Baltimore Ravens, but also made the Pro Bowl as a starter for the Buffalo Bills back in 2015. Now, it’s time for Jordan Love to take full advantage of this experience to maximize his own game.
