The 2023 NFL Draft and the first waves of free agency are behind us, but the Texans aren't done adding talent to the roster.
One of the major themes of Nick Caserio's tenure in Houston has been signing useful veterans on cheap, one-year deals. The trend continued this offseason, as the team overhauled the roster a year ago.
On Tuesday, the team added another player that fits the description.
Per reports, the Texans agreed to a deal with linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. Carter was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Maryland. Carter spent four seasons in Carolina, slowly working his way to a starting role.
Carter's most effective season came in 2021 when the linebacker collected 88 tackles, three tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits. That season led to Carter signing a one-year pact with the Kansas City Chiefs, but Carter would be cut before Week 1 of the 2022 season.
Carter did end up seeing action in seven games in 2022, all with the Cleveland Browns. The former Terrapin is surely hoping to rebound after a disappointing 2022 season.
Carter joins Neville Hewitt and rookie Henry To'oTo'o as the latest pieces to join the LB room in Houston. That trio will be vying for playing time behind Christian Harris, Denzel Perryman, and Cory Littleton.
Carter has never been a sack artist, but he figures to help out in the run game and on special teams.
