Three free agent CBs the Colts should consider signing before the regular season with injuries piling up during training camp
The Colts should pick up the phone and sign one of these free agent CBs
The Indianapolis Colts started training camp believing that their CB room was one of the deeper position groups on their roster. Early in camp, the strong play from the group was proving the team right, but sadly, something out of their control has derailed a group that appeared to be preparing for a big season.
Injuries are piling up at CB for the Colts, with rookie Justin Walley on the IR with a torn ACL, Jaylon Jones and Juju Brents not practicing due to hamstring injuries, and, most recently, star slot CB Kenny Moore II suffered a knee injury that will likely keep him out of practice. What once was expected to be a strength is quickly becoming a weakness, as the only healthy player in the room projected to be a day one starter is Charvarius Ward.
Luckily for the Colts, there are still some intriguing options available in free agency that could help to soften the blow injuries have caused. Below are three that I think make the most sense for the Colts if they elect to add a CB in free agency ahead of the 2025 season.
3 free agent CBs the Colts could sign
Stephon Gilmore

Future Hall of Famer Stephon Gilmore spent a season with the Colts in 2022. Gilmore had a successful season, starting 16 games and recording two interceptions as the team’s top outside CB. The team’s season, on the other hand, was a hot mess. The Colts only won four games and fired head coach Frank Reich mid-season. With the Colts set to go through a rebuild, they elected to do right by Gilmore and trade him to the Dallas Cowboys.
Even since his departure, Gilmore has spoken highly of his time with the Colts. He played a role in Camryn Bynum signing this offseason. He also went out of his way to share positive thoughts on the Colts’ new ownership following the passing of Jim Irsay. Gilmore will turn 35 in September and is nearing the end of his career. However, that is one reason he could make sense for the Colts this year. The team has multiple young players it likes at the position for the future, but the outlook for CB in 2025 has taken a significant hit.
Asante Samuel Jr.

Asante Samuel Jr. is the son of former NFL great Asante Samuel. The Los Angeles Chargers drafted Samuel Jr. in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He hit the road running as he recorded two interceptions in each of his first three seasons. Last year, however, his season was cut short after just four games due to a shoulder injury.
His medicals must worry teams for a promising CB who is still only 25 years old to still be a free agent in August. The Colts seem to be in a place where it could be worth rolling the dice to see if you can land a talented young CB to fill the massive hole injuries have created on their roster. He can also play outside and in the slot, which would make him an option to replace Moore II if he has to miss anytime to start the year.
Kendall Fuller

Another veteran option still sitting in free agency is former third-round pick Kendall Fuller. Fuller has had a productive nine-year NFL career with three different franchises. His most recent stop came last year with the Miami Dolphins, where he started 11 games. Fuller would give the Colts a veteran with over 100 career starts under his belt, who, when needed, can be a solid starter. He would also be able to easily slide into a reserve role if the Colts’ CB room can get healthy at some point during the season.
