Anthony Richardson’s latest move proves that he may have no choice but to stick with the Indianapolis Colts for the 2026 season
Anthony Richardson has changed his mind amid offseason workouts in Indianapolis, and it could foreshadow him changing his stance with the Colts entirely.
The Indianapolis Colts were very clear with the direction of their offense this offseason. After inking Alec Pierce to a long-term extension, the Colts doubled down on Daniel Jones, signing him to an extension despite coming off an injury-riddled 2025 campaign.
Not that Anthony Richardson or his camp needed any more evidence that his time as the starter in Indy was over, but that was the final nail in the coffin, per se. Richardson has requested a trade, and the Colts said they would oblige, but to this point, there have been no takers, and now it seems that Richardson is having second thoughts.

Anthony Richardson reports to voluntary workouts after skipping the first two weeks
“Colts QB Anthony Richardson reported today for voluntary offseason workouts after staying home the past two weeks, per source. With the Colts seemingly no closer to trading him, as he requested, and with no indication they’ll release him, he’s back for the time being.” – Stephen Holder, ESPN
Credit to whoever in Richardson’s circle it was that told him to get up there and get to working out with the team. As awkward as the situation may now be, if Daniel Jones gets hurt in 2026, (which has been a common theme in his career), Richardson is one snap away from being the starter again.
That may not be what he wants, and perhaps a change of scenery would be better for everyone, but until that day comes, Richardson is contractually obligated to be inside the Indianapolis Colts’ facility.
Of course, these workouts are just voluntary, but when OTAs, mandatory minicamp, and ultimately training camp roll around, if Richardson is still on the team, he needs to be there.
He may have had his fifth-year option declined, and he may be a lame-duck heading into the 2026 season, but the Colts still own his rights until the 2027 league year begins next March, meaning he needs to be there through that timeframe.
