There was a lot of excitement surrounding the Indianapolis Colts’ preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night, despite the game being a preseason game. Head coach Shane Steichen announced that Anthony Richardson would start the game and play for about a quarter and a half.
Sadly, he didn’t make it that far as his day ended on his second drive in the first quarter after taking a massive hit.
Anthony Richardson suffered a finger injury in the first quarter
Richardson took a massive shot from a free blitzer, and he instantly went to the sideline after getting up off the ground. That would be his final play on the day, giving him a final stat line of 2/3 for 21 yards. Going into the half, Steichen shared that Richardson had suffered a dislocation in his pinky finger, and it had been popped back in on the sideline.
After the game, when Steichen was asked about Richardson’s status, he shared that the QB is considered day to day. He was also asked about how this event would affect the team’s previous plan to start Daniel Jones in their second preseason outing, which led him to share that it is something they will evaluate. Richardson spoke about his status and shared that his pinky finger is a bit sore, but he said he will be okay. He also shared that he tried to return to the game, but the staff wouldn’t let him.
The next week will be very important as the team announces who will start in the second preseason game, while also determining whether Richardson’s pinky will force him to miss any practice time ahead of their second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. If he does have to miss practice and, even worse, next week’s game, it would likely have a massive impact on the ongoing QB battle. A battle that many following closely believe Richardson had the lead in going into this game, thanks to his strong start to camp. Luckily for Richardson, Jones wasn’t able to come into the game and light it up, which could have swung the momentum of this competition in his favor, but he finished with a pretty uninspiring stat line of 10/21 for 144 yards and no touchdowns.
