Colts sign a former second-round pick who is attempting an NFL comeback to add depth to a position of need on their roster

The Indianapolis Colts are once again signing a player out of retirement, but can lightning strike twice and help this player make the team’s 53-man roster ahead of the 2026 season.

After the Indianapolis Colts‘ decision to sign Philip Rivers out of retirement, no roster move they can make should shock anyone.

If any other team had signed a safety who has been out of the league since 2022, it would be surprising, but this is the Colts we are talking about. So, of course, they are the team to sign former Los Angeles Chargers safety Nasir Adderley.

Colts sign former Chargers safety Nasir Adderley after being out of the NFL for three seasons

The Chargers selected Adderley in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft after his college career at Delaware. He appeared in only four games as a rookie, but he hit the road running in his second season.

Adderley played in 46 games and started in 44 of them from 2020 to 2022. He recorded three interceptions, 232 total tackles, four tackles for loss, and 12 pass deflections during his career. Due to an injury, he announced his retirement from the NFL after the 2022 season.

It was reported earlier this offseason that he was attempting a comeback to the NFL. It appears the Cotls have decided to be the team to grant him his wish. He will turn 29 before training camp arrives and will attempt to make the Colts roster.

The Colts lost two safeties this offseason with Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas signing elsewhere in free agency. Therefore, the starting job next to Cam Bynum is wide open for the taking. There is also a clear need for depth at the position, which gives him a better chance of making the team’s 53-man roster.

This has the potential to be a really cool story, but cool stories don’t win games. The Colts will only keep Adderley around if they believe he being on the roster improves the team’s defense or special teams. It will definitely be an interesting storyline to watch throughout training camp.
