Jeff Hafley goes between mysterious and pumped as he hints at all the ways he can deploy Micah Parsons for the Packers
Defensive coordinator is excited to have an elite talent at his disposal.
The 2024 season was a real test for defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. He called plays in the NFL for the first time in his career, and he had to adapt and adjust due to injuries and an underwhelming performance from the defensive front. It worked pretty well, with the Packers finishing the season inside the top 10 in defensive DVOA.
That ability to be creative and flexible could help Hafley even more in 2025. The Packers made a huge investment to acquire Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys, and his versatility to play at the edge, off-ball linebacker, or even as an interior rusher creates multiple options for the unit.
“Suddenly, Micah Parsons walks into the building, and it’s game week, and my mind starts going 100 miles an hour thinking of all the ways you can use him,” Hafley said on Thursday. “You just have to be careful. When he’s able to go, I think we just need to gradually build into those opportunities and not rush anything. It’s important, like I’ve always said, to put your players in position to make plays. As we get a feel for him and what he can do, we’ll continue to build and go from there. But to tell you all the different ways I can use him? One, I’m not going to do that. Two, I think we’ll evolve and figure it out as we go. He’s obviously capable of doing a lot of different things and affecting many areas of the field, and I’m very excited that he’s here.”
It’s an obvious challenge for the Packers to get Parsons ready to play. He was acquired on Aug. 28, ten days before the regular season opener against the Detroit Lions. Hafley and defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington have made sure that he can be impactful, if healthy, as soon as possible.
“We’ve got to get him up to speed. It means extra meeting time,” Hafly explained. “DeMarcus [Covington] has done a really good job spending time with him over the weekend and every day extra. He’s been limited, as you know, so I think it’s all going to be gradual. I don’t think it’s anything we need to rush, but we do need to get him caught up to speed as soon as possible.”
Surprise, we have an elite edge
Jeff Hafley was aware that the Packers could acquire Micah Parsons and was negotiating. But until a deal of this magnitude is finalized, there will always be questions. When Matt LaFleur entered Hafley’s office with the phone, it was an unforgettable moment.
“I got a big smile on my face when I found out who it was. That’s really how I found out. Obviously, there were some conversations when stuff was kind of going on, and Matt kept me updated. But that was really it, when I found out,” Hafley recalled. “They kept me in the loop on what they felt I needed to know or if I had any questions. But the first time I really found out was when Matt came into my office with a big smile on his face.”
Now that the initial frenzy has passed, it’s time to go to work and translate the excitement to the football field.
