Andy Reid is saying the same things Chiefs fans don't want to hear
Losing four of your last six games is not something I had on my bingo card for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023. In fact, that's unheard of in the Patrick Mahomes - Andy Reid era. The Chiefs now have the most losses they have had in a season with Mahomes at quarterback and are one more loss away from tying for the most losses they have had under Andy Reid.
To make things a bit worse, they currently have as many losses as the 2017 team that was led by Alex Smith, the season Mahomes was drafted and sat as a rookie.
A lot has changed since then, for the better, and obviously, now it isn't as good.
Since then, the Chiefs have been to three Super Bowls, won two, and hosted the AFC Championship game every year. This could be the first year that doesn't happen in this era of Chiefs football. In fact, the way things are looking right now, after a brutal loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, it's tough to say if they can beat the Cincinnati Bengals, who are led by Jake Browning, next week. They still have a 98% chance to make the playoffs, but even that feels hopeless at the moment.
That is how bad things are getting, yet we are being told this team is so close to fixing their offensive issues. Andy Reid is saying the same thing every week, and frankly, fans are getting tired of it.
"Yeah, we're just off a tick, and again, that's my responsibility to make sure I give them the right stuff to work with in the run game and pass game. That's what's got to take place," Reid told reporters on Monday after the loss to Las Vegas.
We have heard this "just a tick off" phrase about 2652825 times this season. Sure, I'm being a bit exaggerative, but that is what it feels like. The Chiefs are not just a tick-off, and their offensive issues are far from just the wide receiver corps away. They have some pass protection issues and play-calling issues as well.
Fans are tired of hearing Reid say that. Now, no fan is calling for his job or anything like that; however, fans do want another explanation. The media does, too. How come this team, with one wide receiver in JuJu Smith-Schuster, mainly gone, can't seem to get the ball in their wide receiver's hands?
This week, the Chiefs will need to do a bit of soul-searching.
