Andy Reid pulls the curtain back a bit and teases about doing what the fan base has begged him to do for so long

The Kansas City Chiefs have never had a dynamic running back since Patrick Mahomes has been the quarterback, and now they do.

The Kansas City Chiefs did something this offseason that the fans had been asking them to do for years. They went out and got Patrick Mahomes a dynamic running back, something he has never had in his NFL career. They signed Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker to a three-year, $43 million deal.

Mahomes has had some decent help at the RB spot over the last few years, but Walker is already the most talented and best RB he’s ever had, and they’ve yet to play together.

“He’s a heck of a player,” Andy Reid said to Rich Eisen. “And what a great year he had, he and the Seattle Seahawks. We are very excited to have him on board. Brett Veach and his crew did a great job getting him here.

“Heck, we will utilize him. He’s a great thing to add to the offense. I think he’s excited to be here. He’s been here every day during the OTAs, working his tail off. He’s really looking forward to playing, and so, I guess we will have to use him.”

Maybe this will call for the Chiefs going under center more

There have been complaints regarding this team and their under-center usage for years. Kansas City officially has no excuses not to run it more, as they have a dynamic RB in the backfield who can run under center and be a decoy in play action from under center. Last season, the Chiefs ran pass plays from under center fewer than anyone in the league except the Washington Commanders, with just 48 total snaps, per Sports Info Solutions.

They ran the fourth-fewest run plays from under-center. That’s always been more of a Chiefs thing than a personnel thing, though. In the past, they have done well when they did go under center, but still didn’t do it a ton. Seattle ran the second-most pass plays under center last year with Walker, and the fourth-most run plays under center with Walker.

Kenneth Walker’s stats in 2025

  • 1,027 rushing yards
  • 5 Rushing TDs
  • 221 attempts

Sure, that’s a different staff, and it doesn’t mean the Chiefs will do that. However, it shows that he can do it and be successful with it, because Seattle won the Super Bowl playing that way. Mahomes will now be able to manipulate defenses a bit more and won’t be as predictable.

So, yes, Andy Reid better use Walker. Obviously, he is teasing, but if Walker doesn’t have a big impact on the offense, then something went horribly wrong.
