Kansas City Chiefs bet on familiar face with L’Jarius Sneed signing, but could be repeating a common NFL mistake

The Kansas City Chiefs’ decision to sign CB L’Jarius Sneed is a low-risk, high nostalgia move that could raise the floor in 2026. But do these types of signings work out in the NFL?

After hosting him on a recent visit, the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to sign CB L’Jarius Sneed, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Sneed returns to Kansas City after being traded away to the Tennessee Titans in 2024 while on the franchise tag. He was released by the Tennessee Titans on March 13, 2026, after signing a four-year $76.4M contract extension. Unfortunately for Tennessee, Sneed didn’t live up to the deal. He played in just 12 games, recording 49 tackles and 3 passes defended. Sneed had no interceptions or sacks across two seasons from 2024-2025.

L’Jarius Sneed’s Chiefs History

Sneed was a 2020 NFL Draft pick out of Louisiana Tech. He developed into a do-it-all defensive back and became a two-time Super Bowl Champion with Kansas City.

  • 57 regular season starts
  • 10 interceptions
  • 40 passes defended
  • 6.5 sacks

The idea here is simple. The Chiefs hope that Steve Spagnuolo’s scheme and Sneed’s familiarity with the defense bring out the best version of him. The version that became a shutdown corner on the inside and outside from 2020 through 2023.

At worst, he can help coach up the youth in the secondary. Just like he did with Trent McDuffie, Josh Williams, Bryan Cook, and Jaylen Watson in 2022. At best, the 29-year-old returns to form and makes a tangible impact. After all, this team has big aspirations after a down year in 2025.

Just how often do reunions of this sort go to plan, though?

Jets’ Darrelle Revis reunion is the cautionary tale the Chiefs have to watch out for

When Darrelle Revis returned to the New York Jets for a second stint in his age 30 season. He signed a big multi-year contract, which looked somewhat reasonable after the first year of production. In 14 games started, he posted five interceptions, nine passes defended, and four fumble recoveries, earning Pro Bowl honors.

However, the second season saw a steep drop-off in production. In 15 starts, he posted one interception and just five passes defensed. He was released from that deal and ultimately ended up in Kansas City the following season, which would be the last of his NFL career.

What can the Chiefs learn from this? Don’t overcommit or expect too much. This needs to be a one-year experiment at most. Ideally, Sneed has a good year in 2026. He could then find another home in free agency that nets K.C. a compensatory pick in the future.

The biggest variable here is L’Jarius Sneed’s ability to stay healthy

We asked A to Z Sports’ Easton Freeze about Sneed’s time in Tennessee. My takeaway is that his health was the biggest detriment. But that’s something we already know that Kansas City has dealt with before. Specifically, with a nagging knee injury.

“The L’Jarius Sneed experiment in Tennessee was one of the biggest disaster signings in recent NFL free agency.

For an AAV of $19.1 million, Sneed gave the Titans 12 measly starts in two years. He was more out of sight than anything, dealing with extremely unfortunate injuries that ended both seasons far too early. When he was on the field, his play was mediocre in summary. This is a player whose body unfortunately failed him.

A vibe I got from people in the know with Sneed and his situation is that he’s somebody on a personal level who felt far more at home in KC. He built a home and place of belonging there when he was an NFL star for them. When they traded him, perhaps he felt a sense of betrayal and unfamiliarity. His best hope for a return to relevance is exactly what he’s chosen to do: return to Kansas City.”
