Kansas City Chiefs GM Brett Veach confirms he’ll explore veteran free agent market as 90-man roster takes shape this offseason

The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t opposed to adding veterans in free agency. However, Chiefs GM Brett Veach gave a bit of a reality check on The Pat McAfee Show about where they are in evaluating their 90-man offseason roster.

The Kansas City Chiefs might not be done making additions to their 90-man offseason roster. However, any additions might not be imminent according to Chiefs GM Brett Veach.

Speaking on Pat McAfee’s ESPN show on Friday, May 1, Veach was asked whether the team would add a wide receiver or another position of need before training camp. He confirmed that it’s on the table. He even says he’s already been in contact with agents regarding several high-value players.

“Yeah, there’s certainly a possibility of that,” Veach said. “In fact, some of those players that you have listed there, I think I’ve spoken to some of those agents already.”

The graphic featured 18 players, including two former Chiefs players.

  • LB Kyle Van Noy
  • WR Deebo Samuel
  • TE David Njoku
  • K Daniel Carlson
  • LB Bobby Wagner
  • DE Cam Jordan
  • WR Jauan Jennings
  • WR Stefon Diggs
  • OG Kevin Zeitler
  • CB L’Jarius Sneed
  • DE Joey Bosa
  • DE Von Miller
  • WR Tyreek Hill
  • WR Keenan Allen
  • OT Taylor Decker
  • LB Bobby Okereke
  • DE Haason Reddick

Obviously, there has been plenty of buzz about Tyreek Hill potentially rejoining the team when he’s healthy. L’Jarius Sneed just stoked the flames of a potential return with a recent social media post. Former Saints DE Cam Jordan is also a player linked to the team.

As enticing as all of it might be for fan speculation, Veach is a realist about where the team is currently in their roster evaluation process.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach isn’t counting his chickens before they hatch when it comes to free agent additions

While Brett Veach seems interested in potentially adding another piece or two to the roster via free agency, the team simply isn’t quite there yet. Currently, Veach is focused on evaluation. He needs to see what they have in draft picks, undrafted free agents, and tryout players at the Chiefs’ rookie minicamp.

“I think, where we are now from a process standpoint, as I mentioned, we have our rookies in this week,” Veach explained. “We’re going to, you know, we had eight or nine draft picks. We signed (20) undrafted free agents (and) have (105) guys here trying out, so we’ll see. We might flip some of those guys. Some of those guys may end up on our roster. Then after that, we’ll officially have our 90 (man roster). Then, we’re probably going to go through Phase II, but we’ll start picking up the phone, reaching out to agents, and we may have some visits here in the late spring, early summer, before training camp.”

Once they’ve completed the rookie minicamp, they’ll have a chance to decide whether to sign any tryout players. From there, Veach may invite some veteran players to OTAs and mandatory minicamp during Phase III to try out for the team. However, that’s typically something reserved for unproven commodities. For veterans like those suggested on the McAfee show, they are unlikely to join Kansas City before training camp.

There’s also the question of finances. The Chiefs still have to clear cap space to sign their rookie draft class, let alone have money to navigate the season and make an addition in free agency. They’ve got ways to get that done, so it doesn’t seem to be a deterrent, so much as something that needs to happen before this talk can become reality.

“We’re always looking to get 1% better,” Veach concluded. “If something makes sense for us and something makes sense for the player and the agent, you know, we’re all for it. Who knows, we’ll see, but we’ll certainly be making a lot of calls.”
