The Kansas City Chiefs are not going about their offseason the right way regarding the money they have available and the money they could create. In other words, they are incorrectly handling the Chris Jones contract extension.

Recently, Chiefs insider Nate Taylor revealed something huge about the extension situation, and it won't make you feel any better about it.

The Chiefs, according to a team source, are waiting to see if the New York Jets and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams agree to a contract extension before the start of training camp. If that deal happens and Williams indeed becomes the second-highest-paid player at the position behind Los Angeles Rams star Aaron Donald, who signed a three-year, $95 million contract restructure last June, Kansas City would then be able to negotiate a proper extension with Jones ahead of the upcoming season. -Nate Tayor, The Athletic

Waiting on another younger player to get his deal done is not a good idea, at all. If they get it done quicker, they could save money and pay him less than they may have to if they wait. Williams is looking at being one of the top-three highest-paid defensive tackles in the league. Jones is better than him and had an even better season. If you wait and see what Williams's number is, you have to one-up it for Jones, which isn't good.

Waiting doesn't help in this situation at all. If you wait, you lose the time and money you could use to get more free agents.

Not long ago, the Chiefs were close to getting DeAndre Hopkins until Odell Beckham Jr. messed it all up with his contract. Then the Chiefs signed Donovan Smith and essentially had no more money to give out.

Signing Jones to an extension could save and clear up a lot of money on the books for this season – anywhere around $10-12 million, depending on the details of the extension, obviously. That would give them more money to work with in terms of getting Hopkins or anyone else they may be interested in.

Getting Hopkins would give them that number-one receiver they have been looking for, but it would also make them an uber-elite offense. Sure, they are elite now, but imagine adding one of the best receivers in the league, which would only make the offense better.

Getting that deal done earlier could have allowed them to trade for him when the talks initially started. It could have allowed them to bring back Frank Clark; it could have allowed him to bring in another defensive end or even resign Juan Thornhill. Who knows what the Chiefs could have done with that extra money?

But, the longer they wait, the more opportunities start slipping away from them.
