Second-year Chiefs WR Jalen Royals settling in
Jalen Royals is starting to put some things together for Kansas City, and it might have something to do with his playing time. Royals saw the same exact number of offensive snaps in preseason Week 2 as he saw in preseason Week 1. This time around, those snaps resulted in six receptions on six targets for 51 yards. He also had the longest reception of the day for the Chiefs at 17 yards. Royals appears to be trending upward, and it also seems like the coaching staff has a better idea of how to use him successfully.
Mansoor Delane gets nearly a dozen shutdown cornerback snaps in his debut
The No. 6 overall pick by the Chiefs in the 2026 NFL Draft, Mansoor Delane, made his NFL debut on Saturday. He only played during the first quarter, but that’s all it took for him to impress. Through three drives, he played 11 snaps at outside cornerback. He wasn’t targeted once by Baker Mayfield or Jake Browning. Typically, seasoned quarterbacks will test rookie cornerbacks, but they didn’t even think to look his way in his first NFL action. Delane also had a beautiful downhill trigger on a screen pass that disrupted the play for a loss. He very much so looks capable of playing opposite Nohl Williams early for Kansas City.
Jaydn Ott gets the practice squad stash treatment
Jaydn Ott was one of the players that I wanted to see more of in preseason Week 2. That didn’t happen though. He played nine snaps on offense in preseason Week 1, but didn’t get a single snap on offense in preseason Week 2. Those nine snaps in Week 1 resulted in 2-of-3 receiving for 40 yards total, and the long reception of the day at 27 yards. Ott was one of two offensive players who didn’t receive a snap on offense on Saturday, joining fellow running back E.J. Smith. Now, this likely had more to do with the competition between Emari Demercado, Brashard Smith, and Emmett Johnson for real snaps. At the same time, it feels like it could be an attempt for the Chiefs to perhaps stash one of these two backs on the practice squad this season.
Other quick-hitting Chiefs observations
- These are the players who didn’t play: WR 1 X.Worthy, WR 4 R.Rice, WR 5 J.Weimer, WR 8 J.Caldwell, QB 15 P.Mahomes, S 17 A.Gilman, LB 23 D.Tranquill, DB 27 C.Conner, CB 38 L.Sneed, LB 43 J.Cochrane, TE 46 M.Pline, DT 55 O.Norman-Lott, G 65 T.Smith, T 71 J.Simmons, T 74 K.Diesch, WR 82 J.Holiday, DE 97 A.Gillotte
- Emmanuel Ogbah played 22 snaps in his re-debut with the Chiefs. He looked like a player still getting his football legs under him after missing offseason work.
- Amari McNeill led the Chiefs defense in snaps. He earned a sack during a hard day’s work.
- Speaking of pass rush, Felix Anudike-Uzomah (21 snaps) & R Mason Thomas (15 snaps) had a combined nine pressures against the Bucs on Saturday.
- Pete Nygra led the Chiefs with 50 offensive snaps on Saturday. It was his second consecutive week as the leader in snaps on offense.
