According to multiple reports, the Chiefs are acquiring OLB Josh Uche from the New England Patriots in another deal ahead of the trade deadline. This comes after they acquired WR DeAndre Hopkins, who made his debut with the Chiefs on Sunday. Kansas City will send a 2026 sixth-round draft pick to the Patriots to acquire Uche, who will immediately bolster the edge-rushing unit for the Chiefs.
Uche has appeared in 58 games for New England across the last five seasons, including four starts. During that span, he's recorded 76 total tackles, 19 tackles for loss and 20.5 sacks.
The Chiefs really liked Uche coming out of Michigan in the 2020 NFL draft. He told me that he had a formal interview with the team during the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine. The team also had several virtual meetings with Uche, who went three picks ahead of where Kansas City selected Willie Gay Jr. in Round 2.
I'm told this move is two-fold for Kansas City but that it mostly has to do with injuries. With the injury to DE Mike Danna, the Chiefs needed to add another edge rusher. Danna has missed the past two games with a pectoral injury and has missed three games so far this season. They also seem to believe that improving the pass rush will help a secondary that will now rely on some younger and inexperienced cornerbacks.
