Chiefs RB Brashard Smith, WR Jalen Royals’ snaps on the rise
Two Chiefs rookies, Brashard Smith and Jalen Royals, saw career-high snap totals on offense. After the game, Andy Reid spoke about making an effort to increase playing time for both Smith and Royals.
“We’ve been trying to increase some of his play time,” Reid said of Smith. “He’s got a lot of talent, so we’re working him in different spots.”
“We were able to get (Jalen) Royals in, too, a couple of rookies. (General Manager) Brett’s (Veach) done a nice job with these rookies that are playing in the game. We’ve got a few of them. We’re just giving them a little bit at a time as we go.”
Royals’ debut left something to be desired, but Smith is starting to catch his stride in the passing game with three receptions on four targets for 27 yards (nine yards per reception).
Consistent D-Line rotation emerging beside Chiefs DT Chris Jones
Over the past two weeks, the Chiefs have begun to find their groove for their interior defensive line rotation opposite star defensive tackle Chris Jones. Derrick Nnadi, Omarr Norman-Lott, and Jerry Tillery (who recorded his first sack with K.C. on Sunday) each split 45 snaps evenly. That feels like where this is trending for the remainder of the season, unless one of the trio can break out and prove they can be on the field for a higher percentage of snaps (looking at you, rookie).
A new receiver is leading the way in snaps for the Chiefs
It seems like each week there’s a new receiver leading the snap counts for the Chiefs. Last week, it was Tyquan Thornton. This time around, you’d expect it to be WR Xavier Worthy, after he made his return to action in Week 4 vs. the Ravens, but this week it was actually JuJu Smith-Schuster. Expect this to continue fluctuating as the team determines the optimal workload for Worthy and the Royals.
Chiefs Week 4 Snap Trends:
- The only player to get 100% of the snaps on either offense, defense, or special teams was Chiefs LG Kingsley Suamataia.
- Backup QB Gardner Minshew got his first snaps late in the fourth quarter after it was clear the game was won for Kansas City.
- Chiefs rookies Kevin Knowles and Jeffrey Bassa were the only non-specialists to play special teams-only snaps.
- Veterans Josh Williams and Jack Cochrane led the Chiefs in special teams snaps (18).
