In Week 13, there were two big lateral plays that caught everyone's attention.
But other than that, it's not something that is utilized much in the NFL.
That is, unless your name is Travis Kelce.
It has become the Kansas City Chiefs tight end's signature play, but he loves to see when other people use it.
So, Jason Kelce brought up a very important question on the latest episode of the New Heights podcast.
"Should there be more laterals in the game of football," he asked.
Travis didn't hesitate to answer.
"It's the most underused rule in the game of football," the tight end said. "Yes."
This whole conversation started when the brothers talked about Travis' lateral from the Chiefs' win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Black Friday.
He saw that a Raiders defender stood in his way for the first down, so he lateraled the ball to running back Samaje Perine, who was able to get a few additional yards.
“Yeah, man, right place, right time. I’m happy it worked," Kelce said about the viral play. "I think Coach Reid is on quote saying that if you're going to do it, it better work."
However, he wasn't willing to give himself complete credit for this one. Instead, he remained critical.
"If I have a little bit more awareness, I don't even have to pitch it though. I can just get vertical up the hash and get the first down myself." Kelce added. "So, as I'm always watching the film, how can I make a play better or how can I make more of an impact in the game? If I could get the first by myself without lateraling the ball, yeah, I'm going to try and do that.
But in the end, it helped the Chiefs get a first down, and ultimately the win.
"This is just an instinct that I had and I’m lucky we were able to get a fresh set of downs.”
