The Los Angeles Chargers are committing to fixing a massive issue that hurt them a season ago. The 2026 NFL Draft will play a role in that plan, undoubtedly.

Chargers GM Joe Hortiz says more moves coming for OL

Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz had media availability on Thursday, a week away from the start of this year’s draft. He made a statement regarding a weakness of last year’s team that plenty of fans are happy about on social media.

Hortiz, when asked about more additions along the offensive line, said that Los Angeles is not done on the offensive line. After losing offensive tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater for much of last season, the Bolts is executive is determined to have better reinforcements available and a stronger interior for Justin Herbert and the entire Chargers offense.

Hortiz did not rule out drafting an offensive tackle in the first round, either. While that would be rather aggressive, he wants to stick to the team’s talent evaluation and take the top guy available with that pick.

“You gotta have tackles. …”, Hortiz detailed. “If in a perfect world he doesn’t see the field, take the best player available.”

Los Angeles needs more talent on interior and at tackle

In the first round, I think guard has to be on the Bolts’ radar. Oregon’s Emmanuel Pregnant or Texas A&M’s Chase Bisontis have both pushed their way into late round one conversations.

Penn State’s Vega Ioane would be the “dream” outcome for Los Angeles, but he is projected to be closer to a top fifteen selection. It feels unlikely he makes it into the mid-20s, so the Chargers would have to trade up for him.

LA can’t go into next season with Trevor Penning or Kayode Awosika as a projected starter at guard. Furthermore, the tackle depth has to provide a higher baseline of play than it did last season.

The performances from the depth at both of those spots, behind Slater and Alt, were toward the bottom of the barrel in the NFL.
