The Los Angeles Chargers went in and handled business in the first football game of this year’s NFL campaign. At the helm, quarterback Trey Lance had an impressive outing, which began with sharing a cool moment with head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Jim Harbaugh’s cool moment with Trey Lance before game

The Chargers head coach shared an emotional, heartfelt moment with Lance to attempt to pump him up ahead of the preseason exhibition. Social media caught wind of the interaction between coach and QB, and many absolutely loved to see it on the NFL’s opening night.

You can tell how much Harbaugh loves to root on his guys. He’s always been one of Justin Herbert’s biggest supporters, but his praise and appreciation reaches far beyond just the starting QB in LA. He’s probably hoping that Lance can carve out an NFL future while he’s getting these reps for the Bolts, too.

Lance’s performance proves he can grab the upper hand for backup job

The (still) young quarterback was really impressive, albeit against mostly backup talent for the Detroit Lions. Lance look composed and made a ton of good decisions. His mobility helped him keep plays alive, and he took advantage of open passing windows throughout his performance against the Lions.

Lance finished the game 13/20 for 120 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball three times for eight yards. His efficiency was notable, and fellow backup QB option Taylor Heinicke did not play. That may notion that he has an upper hand on the job behind Justin Herbert as of now, but Lance may be closing the gap.

It will be interesting to see the balance of Lance’s reps, with Heinicke, for the rest of the preseason. Could the Chargers give him more time to prove that he is the player with more upside and ability behind Herbert? Was this just a flash in the pan for the former first-round selection?

Only time will tell. Regardless, it was a fantastic night for Lance, Harbaugh, and the Bolts.
